One great challenge that process control and automation engineers face is the frequent and overwhelming number of alarms that are generated by modern regulatory control systems. Today’s DCS and PLC systems have thousands of tags, and hundreds of control blocks, all of which can generate alarms. Many times these alarms are received by control room operators who view them as a nuisance at best. Important notifications are lost in the “noise” of the alarm system. Several alarm management packages have become commercially available. Most are ugly, complicated, and limited in their utility. Using KSX, we implement a simple and elegant framework for processing and managing alarms.
